Today, the shift from traditional SEO to GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is clearly becoming an imperative for transversal digital transformation. For brands, the challenge is to transform their site into a true "data vault" that is intelligible by machines; indeed, a site that is not "LLM-friendly," or adapted to LLMs, is a depreciated digital asset, destined to disappear from the radar of the new search era. It is therefore time to move from simple SEO to building a source of truth that is as readable as it is reliable for AIs.
SEO - Oriented towards clicks and traffic, volumetric keywords, paginated structure.
GEO - Oriented towards visibility/authority, atomic and structured content.
And while many internet users choose to rely on their LLM of choice to conduct search, the clearest incentive for the SEO to GEO transition might just be the steady rollout of Google’s AI Overviews.
AI Overviews (AIO) are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of Google search results to provide quick answers to complex queries. Unveiled as the Search Generative Experience (SGE) in May 2023, the feature officially transitioned to AI Overviews with a wide US rollout in 2024. Since then, deployment has expanded to over 150 countries and territories. While some regions have faced temporary delays, the trend has accelerated across the rest of Europe (including Germany, Italy, Spain, and Portugal) as Google continues to adapt to local regulatory requirements.
The AIO functionality is part of the continuity of traditional SEO strategies, extending the logic of Question/Answer blocks introduced by Google during 2015 (with major updates in 2019 and then in 2021) via the "People Also Ask" (PAA) features. The optimization of blogs and landing pages already required the structuring of informative content in the form of direct answers. Ultimately, the historical efforts deployed to master PAAs now allow algorithms to more effectively explore, process, and cite this data. The advent of global language models thus constitutes an extension of this semantic optimization, multiplying opportunities for visibility with LLMs.
Obviously, the arrival of AI previews is not without consequences, with global data already revealing a severe decrease in web audiences. The integration of AI Overviews amplifies the phenomenon of "zero-click" queries, which mechanically reduces engagement towards original sources, and this trend (initiated by generative search modules) is intensifying with the emergence of interactive dialogue spaces that encourage direct conversation. But while this model reduces the overall volume of traffic, it also performs upfront targeting: internet users redirected from these AI environments reportedly show a significantly more qualified profile. And for paid media, and more specifically Google Ads, the fundamentals remain unchanged but now rely more on automated formats (such as broad match, AI Max, and Performance Max, etc.) to fully integrate into AI Overview and AI Mode experiences.
Our recent audits (notably for ultra-luxury players) demonstrate that the brands most visible in GEO are those that have already begun their technical transformation. To adapt your site into a knowledge base suitable for AI Overviews, we recommend focusing on 3 imperatives:
For Google Ads Paid Media, the integration of ads into AI Overviews relies on automated formats (AI max, broad match, Performance max). To benefit from this without losing control, strict human governance is essential:
